Titus Volunteer Fire Department

Titus, Alabama is a small community in Elmore County, located north of Wetumpka, which is just north of Montgomery, AL, our state capital.  We are also located on the eastern shore of a large recreational lake, Lake Jordan, which is part of the Alabama Power Hydroelectric System. Below is a satellite view of the Titus area.

Living in a community like ours has many distinct advantages, less traffic, slower pace of life, and much less crime.  Many times on a spring or summer morning, you can go outside while the dew is still dropping from leaves.  Instead of traffic or horns, all you will be able to hear will be a tractor plowing a field, or a bass boat running up the lake.

Elmore County gets it's name from General John A. Elmore, a Major General in the South Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.  He was also a member of the South Carolina and Alabama Legislature.  When he died in 1834, he was buried in Autauga County, Alabama, which would later become Elmore County.  Elmore County covers 621 square miles, and is the 3rd fastest growing county in Alabama.

We are also on the map in the sporting world.  Joe Sewell was born in Titus in 1898, and played Major League Baseball for the Cleveland Indians from 1920 to 1930, and for the New York Yankees from 1931 to 1933.  Joe was entered into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977, and passed away in 1990.

The Titus Volunteer Fire Department was organized back in 1972 when it drew up it's first set of Bylaws.  Long before that, we were the first Volunteer Fire Department to be formed in Elmore County, often responding to calls as far away as Millbrook.  The officers at the time were:

Chief S. I. Harry
First Assistant Chief Raymond Ward
Second Assistant Chief A. K. Colquitt
Captain Wayne Hughes
Lieutenant W. O. Harden
Secretary and Treasurer W. J. Burnette

Though times have changed, political views around the world are different than they were back in 1972 when this fire department was formed, the Mission Statement has remained the same:

"The object of this Fire Department shall be to prevent or surpress all fires, save life, and property, administer first aid, promote safety, and assist any agency of Community, County, State, or Federal Governments when called upon to do so."
